Swaps and Substitutes for Anthotyro Cheese:
We use and Greek Anthotyro cheese, which is a mild, creamy cheese traditionally produced in Greece and made from goat’s or sheep’s milk or a combination of the two.
It is a very versatile type of cheese, that can be used in both sweet and savory recipes.
The classic substitute is Ricotta cheese, which is easily available all over the world.
Other replacements include: unsalted cottage cheese, mascarpone cheese, Greek yoghurt, unsalted cream cheese, unsalted white farmer’s cheese.
Tips & tricks for making this recipe
Instead of walnuts you can use any nuts you like!
We love pistachios, pecans, almonds and almond flakes, as well as seeds such as sunflower seeds, chia seeds, sesame seeds.
Instead of honey, you can use date syrup or petimezi syrup, which is a natural sweetener also known as “grape molasses” or “grape syrup”. It is made from grape juice or grape must.
It has a long history of use in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine. Especially in countries like Greece, Turkey and Cyprus, people have been using it for generations.
For added nutritional value, feel free to add a bit of tahini or almond butter. In addition to raisins, you can use dried figs, dates, apricots, cranberries.
Fresh grapes can be substituted with some fresh figs or blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, cherries.

Easy Greek Breakfast Delight Ready in 3 Minutes!
Ingredients
- 200 gr Anthotyro cheese OR Ricotta cheese OR any unsalted, white goat's / sheep's cheese
- 2 tbsp honey ( preferably thyme honey )
- a handful of walnuts OR almonds OR almond flakes
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds
- 2 stalks fresh grapes white and red
- a pinch of ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Slice cheese into 2 cm pieces
- Drizzle each slice with some honey
- Add chopped walnuts or / and almonds
- Add some sesame seeds
- Sprinkle each slice with a pinch of cinnamon
- Serve with fresh fruit one the side

Enjoy immediately! If you need to store it for later make sure to eat it on the same day, as typically after a few hours the cheese will become humid and will loose it’s freshness.
